For Adults:

Everyday Blessings: the inner work of mindful parenting by Mila and Jon Kabat-Zinn

This book is fantastic and spans all facets of mindful parenting; connection, discipline, knowing ourselves, limit setting, etc. It is a lot to digest but it taps into the spiritual (not religious) aspects of the importance of connection with our children and meeting them both where they are and where we are.

The Parent’s Tao de Ching: Ancient Advice for Modern Parents by William Martin

This book is great to just pick up and read one at a time to contemplate as you go about your day.

For Kids:

Breathe and Be by Kate Coombs

These poems are simple and beautiful and, when read slowly and thoughtfully, have captured my children’s attention each time I have read them aloud. I now grab for it when I feel the energy rising inside or some days I just start with a few poems to bring us together and focused on being present.

Breathe Like a Bear by Kira Willey

We’ve only just gotten this book, but so far we love it. It’s very kid friendly and makes it easy and fun to practice mindfulness. We really enjoyed the “Hot Cocoa” meditation…and then we enjoyed some actual hot cocoa…it was a fun exercise for everyone! The illustrations are cute and whimsical.

What Does it Mean to Be Present? by Rana DiOrio

This book is written in gentle prose with beautiful pictures and a nice, blue butterfly that follows throughout the story. It gives clear and concrete examples of experiences kids have (at the top of the slide) that are actually opportunities to practice mindfulness.
